**** During this Legislature, two MP vacancies had to be filled:
precisely on 23rd March 2003, Prime Minister Dr. Eddie Fenech Adami resigned the premiership in favour of newly appointed Leader of the Nationalist Party, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi. In the bye-election that followed, Dr. Michael Asciak was elected MP in his stead.
Also Dr. Joe Borg, Foreign Minister left the House to take up his new post as EU Commissioner in Brussels.
***** In a bye-election that followed in the 9th District, Mr Franco Galea was elected MP.
****** The Hon. Josef Bonnici resigned his Parliamentary seat to take up the role of Auditor of the European Court of Auditors. Since this MP was elected in a bye-election, the Nationalist Party will co-opt someone within its ranks to fill in his seat.
